What does DDR mean in RAM? DDR4 vs DDR5

Every time you buy RAM you see DDR4 or DDR5, and nobody explains what changes between them or which to pick. Here it is: no jargon, just what matters for gaming.

What does DDR mean?

DDR stands for Double Data Rate. It means the memory transfers data twice per clock cycle: once on the rising edge and once on the falling edge. That makes it twice as efficient as old SDR RAM.

The number that follows (DDR4, DDR5) indicates the generation. Each new generation brings more speed, lower power draw and more bandwidth, but the physical slot changes:DDR4 and DDR5 are not compatible with each other.

DDR4 vs DDR5: key differences

FeatureDDR4DDR5
Standard speed2133–3600 MHz4800–7200+ MHz
BandwidthUp to ~51 GB/sUp to ~100+ GB/s
Typical voltage1.35 V1.1 V (more efficient)
CompatibilityAM4, Intel 10th/11th/12th genAM5, Intel 12th/13th/14th gen
PriceMore affordableStill a slight premium

Note: DDR4 and DDR5 use different physical slots. They are not interchangeable. Your motherboard determines which type you need.

Speed and latency: what nobody explains

MHz speed is not the only number that matters. CAS latency (CL)indicates how many cycles the RAM takes to respond. Faster RAM with higher latency can perform the same or worse than slower RAM with low latency.

The key figure is the absolute latency in nanoseconds: CL ÷ (Speed MHz / 2000). For example, DDR4 3200 CL16 = 10 ns. DDR5 4800 CL40 = 16.7 ns. The DDR4 responds faster despite the lower frequency.

Which matters more for gaming: DDR4 or DDR5?

In pure gaming, the difference between well-configured DDR4 and DDR5 is small (5–10% in most games). What truly matters:

How much RAM do you need for gaming?

Use caseRecommended RAM
Basic gaming (1080p)16 GB
Gaming + streaming32 GB
Gaming + video editing32–64 GB
Demanding games (Starfield, MSFS)32 GB

Dual channel: the trick that changes performance the most

Dual channel means installing RAM in pairs (2×8 GB instead of 1×16 GB) to double the available bandwidth. It is the free change that gains you the most FPS in gaming.

On AMD processors with integrated graphics (APUs) the difference can reach 40%. On discrete builds, the gain is 5–15% in CPU-bound games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Always install the RAM in the correct slots (check your board's manual: usually slots A2 and B2). See our fullRAM memory catalog with 2-module kit options.
