What grip styles are there for a gaming mouse?

Not everyone holds the mouse the same way. Your grip style determines which mouse shape and size gives you more control and less fatigue. Knowing it completely changes how you choose.

Palm grip: your whole palm on the mouse

In the palm grip, your whole hand rests on the mouse: the palm sits on the back, the fingers extend relaxed over the buttons and the thumb and pinky hold the sides.

  • Feel: relaxed, comfortable for long sessions, less fatigue.
  • Control: large movements from the elbow and shoulder. Less precision on micro-adjustments.
  • Ideal for: MOBA, RPG, low-sensitivity (low-DPI) FPS, general use.
  • Ideal mouse: large size (130mm+), raised shape at the back.

Claw grip: fingers arched like a claw

In the claw grip, the palm only touches the back of the mouse and the fingers bend into a "claw": the knuckles are raised and the fingertips are what press the buttons.

  • Feel: more control and agility than palm. Takes some getting used to.
  • Control: a mix of wrist and arm movement. Very versatile.
  • Ideal for: competitive FPS, Battle Royale, any genre.
  • Ideal mouse: medium size (120–130mm), not too tall a profile.

Claw is the most common grip among competitive PC gamers. It offers precise control without sacrificing movement speed.

Fingertip grip: only the fingertips in control

In the fingertip grip, the palm does not touch the mouse at all. Only the fingertips are in contact with it. Movement comes exclusively from fingers and wrist.

  • Feel: maximum agility and turning speed. Takes practice.
  • Control: fast, precise movements. Fatigues faster in long sessions.
  • Ideal for: high-sensitivity (high-DPI) FPS, precise flicking.
  • Ideal mouse: small size (110–120mm), low profile and low weight.

How to find your natural grip

Place the mouse on the desk and grab it in a relaxed way without thinking about it. Look at where your palm rests:

  • Palm rests fully on the mouse → Palm grip
  • Palm touches the back, fingers bent → Claw grip
  • Palm does not touch the mouse, only fingers → Fingertip grip

Your hand size matters too. Measuring from wrist to middle finger: under 17cm = small hand; 17–19cm = medium hand; over 19cm = large hand.
